Lactic Acid – Cosmetic Uses in Skin Care

What Is Lactic Acid?
Lactic Acid occurs naturally in milk and is also naturally present in the skin. In cosmetic formulations, it is used as a skin-conditioning, humectant, and buffering ingredient.
Lactic Acid contributes to maintaining the skin's naturally acidic environment and supports the skin's natural moisturising function. It is also used in skin-softening preparations.
Lactic Acid in Skin Care
As an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), Lactic Acid is commonly used in skin care products designed to improve skin texture and softness. It can also act as an astringent and help adjust the pH of cosmetic formulations.
At higher concentrations, lactic acid preparations have traditionally been used for thickened areas of skin, although such uses may fall outside the scope of ordinary cosmetic claims.
