PPS (Pre Production Sample): Definition and Purpose

PPS (Pre Production Sample): Definition and Purpose

What Is a Pre Production Sample?

A Pre Production Sample (PPS) is a sample of the final packaging produced before the start of mass production.

It allows the packaging to be evaluated under conditions that are closer to the final production version before a larger quantity is manufactured.

What Is a PPS Used For?

A PPS can be used to check important aspects of the packaging, including:

  • Appearance and style – whether the packaging looks as intended.
  • Functionality – whether the packaging components work correctly.
  • Quality – whether the packaging meets the required quality expectations.
  • Overall suitability – whether the packaging is ready for mass production.

PPS in Cosmetic Packaging Development

In cosmetic product development, a PPS can be particularly useful for checking bottles, jars, tubes, closures, pumps, decoration and other packaging components before committing to mass production.

Identifying an issue at the PPS stage can help avoid producing a large quantity of packaging that does not meet the agreed requirements.

PPS Before Mass Production

The PPS is therefore an important step between packaging development and mass production. Once the sample has been reviewed and the required characteristics have been confirmed, production can proceed with greater confidence that the packaging meets the agreed specifications.

A PPS is essentially the final packaging sample used to verify the packaging before mass production.
