Oil Phase: Definition and Role in Cosmetic Formulation

Oil Phase: Definition and Role in Cosmetic Formulation

What Is the Oil Phase?

The oil phase is the part of a cosmetic formulation composed primarily of oil-soluble or oil-dispersible ingredients. It may contain a combination of liquid oils, butters, waxes, esters, fatty alcohols and oil-soluble active ingredients.

Common oil-phase ingredients include:

  • Vegetable oils and butters
  • Esters
  • Waxes
  • Fatty acids and fatty alcohols
  • Oil-soluble active ingredients
  • Oil-soluble fragrances

Oil Phase in Emulsions

In an emulsion, the oil phase can either be the dispersed phase or the continuous phase.

In an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion, oil is dispersed as droplets within the continuous water phase.

In a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion, water is dispersed within a continuous oil phase.

The composition and proportion of the oil phase have a significant influence on the final product's texture, viscosity, spreadability and sensory characteristics.

Oil Phase in Cosmetic Manufacturing

Oil-phase ingredients are often combined and heated separately during the manufacturing process, particularly when the formulation contains waxes or ingredients that require melting.

The selection of ingredients, processing temperature, order of addition and mixing conditions must be carefully controlled to achieve a uniform and stable formulation.

Oil Phase and Cosmetic Product Performance

The oil phase can contribute to several important product properties, including:

  • Emolliency – improving skin softness and feel
  • Occlusivity – helping reduce moisture loss from the skin surface
  • Texture – influencing consistency and richness
  • Spreadability – affecting how easily the product is applied
  • Sensory properties – contributing to slip, after-feel and overall skin feel
