Juniperus Communis Fruit Extract – Cosmetic Uses in Skin Care

What Is Juniperus Communis Fruit Extract?
Juniperus communis fruit extract is obtained from the ripe fruits of Juniperus communis L., commonly known as common juniper or juniper berry. The fruits can be extracted using different methods, including water and ethanol, producing extracts with different chemical compositions.
Cosmetic Uses of Juniper Fruit Extract
Juniper fruit extract is primarily used as a skin-conditioning and antioxidant botanical ingredient. Depending on its composition, it may also contribute astringent, antimicrobial and sensory properties to cosmetic formulations.
It can be incorporated into creams, lotions, gels, serums and other skin care products. Juniper-derived ingredients are also used in colour cosmetics, including lipsticks, foundations, mascaras, blushers and face powders.
Antioxidant Properties
Water and ethanol extracts of Juniperus communis fruits have demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory studies. This activity is associated with naturally occurring phenolic compounds and other phytochemicals.
However, in-vitro antioxidant activity should not automatically be interpreted as a clinically demonstrated antioxidant effect on human skin. The composition and performance of the extract depend strongly on the extraction method, geographical origin, fruit maturity and processing conditions.
Formulation Considerations
Water-based extracts can generally be incorporated into the aqueous phase of emulsions, gels and lotions, while ethanol-based extracts may require different handling.
The colour, odour and composition of botanical extracts can vary between suppliers and batches. Compatibility with preservatives, pH, electrolytes and other formulation components should be evaluated during development.
