What Does Hydrophilic Mean?

The term hydrophilic describes a substance that has an affinity for water. Hydrophilic molecules generally interact readily with water because of their polarity or ionic character.

In cosmetic formulation, hydrophilic ingredients are commonly found in the aqueous phase of a product and may dissolve readily in water.

Hydrophilic Ingredients in Cosmetics

Many commonly used cosmetic ingredients are hydrophilic, including:

• Glycerin
• Propylene glycol
• Sorbitol
• Sodium lactate
• Citric acid
• Amino acids
• Many water-soluble polymers

Hydrophilic ingredients can serve different functions depending on their chemical structure. Humectants, for example, help attract and retain water, while hydrophilic polymers can modify viscosity or stabilise formulations.

Hydrophilic and Lipophilic Ingredients

Hydrophilic and lipophilic ingredients behave differently in cosmetic formulations. Hydrophilic substances generally have greater affinity for water, whereas lipophilic substances have greater affinity for oils and other non-polar materials.

This distinction is particularly important when developing emulsions. The balance between hydrophilic and lipophilic properties influences the behaviour of surfactants and emulsifiers and is one of the principles behind the HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) system.

Formulation Considerations

The hydrophilicity of an ingredient affects its solubility, phase distribution, processing and compatibility with other formulation components.

A highly hydrophilic ingredient will generally be incorporated into the aqueous phase, although pH, temperature, electrolytes and other ingredients can influence its actual behaviour in the finished formulation.

Understanding the hydrophilic properties of raw materials is therefore important when designing stable and homogeneous cosmetic products.
