What Is Licorice Root Extract?
Glycyrrhiza glabra, commonly known as licorice, is a botanical ingredient obtained from the dried and ground rhizome and root of the plant. Licorice-derived ingredients have a long history of use and are also recognised for their cosmetic applications.
Cosmetic Uses of Licorice Root Extract
Licorice root extract is used in cosmetic formulations primarily for its soothing, smoothing, emollient and moisturising properties. It can be incorporated into products designed for dry, sensitive or stressed-looking skin.
It is suitable for a variety of skin care formulations, including creams, lotions, serums and other leave-on products where skin conditioning and moisturisation are desired.
The safety of licorice-derived cosmetic ingredients has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, which concluded that the ingredients evaluated were safe for use in cosmetics.
